Veerkrachtige maa(k)twerklandschappen (Resilient custom landscapes) has been carried out by a group of game design students, in cooperation with Fontys Hogeschool Economie en Communicatie and Ondernemend Venlo. The project term was from August 2020 to February 2021.
The entrepreneurs at Spikweien business park and the municipality of Venlo wanted to see how energy transition can take place in the nearby village of Lomm. Several entrepreneurs tried to start sustainability projects since the 1980s but have not succeeded for various reasons. The main problem was that the impact on the environment in the long term could not be properly estimated.
The project goal was to create a scenario in the game Cities: Skylines that has been modelled after the Spikweien business site and the surrounding area including the Lomm village. The players can apply different sustainability methods. The outcomes provide insight into how the sustainability measures have an impact on the environment in the future.
